About Uber
Uber, a San Francisco-based technology startup, is innovating at the intersection of lifestyle and logistics. Uber connects riders with safe, reliable, convenient transportation providers at a variety of price-points in cities around the world.
Summary
The Operations team is looking for world class data scientists to join its PRO team (Process, Resource & Optimization) where you will help build the analysis and tools that will drive company-wide Operations decisions, for teams around the world. You’ll be at the center of where Uber Ops and Data analytics converge, working with cross-functional teams of engineers, scientists, and product professionals. This is not your typical sit-behind-a-computer-screen-and-organize-data role; candidates who thrive in this role need to be exceptionally well-rounded, flexible, and driven. Having the energy to gather feedback from Ops teams in the field to test assumptions, displaying a passion for nurturing top-tier analytical talent, and demonstrating an ability to dig deep into data-driven operations challenges will be the hallmarks of what defines the ideal candidate to lead this team. This role is a great fit for candidates with experience working with engineering, finance and operations teams - data scientists should understand both operational and engineering priorities. A passion for strategic and operational product decisions and, especially, the ability to apply rigorous statistical analysis skills to those decisions, will make for an ideal fit.
Responsibilities
**Although what you lead day-to-day may vary greatly, the general goal and focuses include the following:** * Work with Operations teams and HQ business partners to understand the “Why?” in addition to the “What?” behind Uber’s biggest logistical challenges * Review data models, queries, and ad hoc data analysis to keep the nerve center of our operations engine running at full speed * Develop global operational dashboards and reports to help streamline the business * Define, create, improve, and automate reporting methods across the business * Proactively develop new KPIs/metrics to identify trends in the 60+ countries we operate * Help test, document and share new data analysis and data visualization approaches * Present findings to senior leadership to drive business and roadmap decisions
Ideal Candidate
* A graduate degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in statistics or a quantitative domain plus hands-on data science experience. Technical understanding must go from the highest abstractions down to the metal. * 2-5 years experience delivering, scaling, and owning highly successful and innovative data science products with your fingerprints all over them - you’re extremely proud of what you’ve accomplished. * Demonstrable proficiency in coding (Python, R preferred) and programming concepts, combined with the enthusiasm and passion to build. * An ability to connect the deep domain expertise of the researcher with the pragmatism and scrappiness of the entrepreneur- you’re a true generalist. * Demonstrable expertise in defining key business metrics and driving organizational clarity through data. * A high bar across the board - from your own contributions to the people you work with to the products you work on * A “driver” personality - biased toward action, great collaborator and master disambiguator/simplifier - constantly pushing toward clarity and delivery. * Grittiness and attention to detail. You never hesitate to roll up your sleeves and tackle something hands-on, you persevere when others fall away. * Finger-tippiness with data: you just go get the data you need with no muss/fuss and can whip it into an insightful story with no help. You know how to leverage data to make decisions without getting stuck in paralysis by analysis.
