About Toyota Motor North America
At Toyota, we work hard to create some of the highest quality vehicles on the road. But there is more to our story. We’re also finding innovative ways to advance society with cutting edge technology, and our commitment to creating a positive impact on people, local communities and the environment.
Summary
We are looking for a candidate who can leverage the investments the company is making in U.S. based global consulting firms, “think tanks” and other organizations to stay on top of emerging policy issues that will affect our operations. This new position will help us create a more informed, connected and robust global government affairs network for Toyota. This position serves both the North America operations and our Japanese HQ. The person will report to the U.S. Group Vice President of government affairs, with a dotted line to the Overseas External Affairs Division (OEAD) in Japan.
Responsibilities
(1) Interface with Global Consulting firms: Toyota retains a number of global consulting firms that are based in the U.S. These firms focus on political and policy developments outside the U.S. They provide the company with strategic insights and intelligence gathering on policy developments, and access/networking with government officials in these countries. This position will help coordinate the work between Toyota and these firms, while also providing strategic guidance and direction on multiple work streams. (2) Relationship management with Think Tanks: Toyota invests in a number of international policy organizations (aka Think Tanks). These organizations focus on global issues such as monetary policy, trade policy and political landscape. The successful candidate will gather relevant intelligence from these organizations, facilitate the engagement of Toyota with their work, and communicate clearly and swiftly within Toyota on information that is important to our business (3) International government affairs support: The person will support work being led by the Group Vice President of government affairs to augment Toyota's government affairs operations in emerging markets (especially Southeast Asia and Latin America). This will include hosting training programs in the U.S., participating in regional gatherings of Toyota government affairs professionals, and deep dives to help the government affairs operations of individual countries.
Ideal Candidate
* Master’s degree in relevant field * Intense intellectual curiosity * Demonstrated skill in policy research * Proven track record of working cross-culturally * Outstanding communication skills * Outstanding project management skills, including a background in managing multiple stakeholders to achieve common objectives * Ability to travel about 20% of the time, including to international locations * Fluency in at least one language in addition to English, with Japanese being a plus * Experience working in a government affairs capacity outside the U.S. * Experience working for an institution with a global policy scope (e.g. World Bank, U.S. State Department, United Nations) * Experience working in a global public policy consulting firm
