Summary
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a Web Developer to help design, develop, and deploy new content for EurekAlert!, an online, global news service operated by AAAS. The incumbent will update and modernize existing code, and provide support and maintenance for the existing website. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the EurekAlert! web development team and editorial staff, as well as internal and external designers, to coordinate new design projects and to help establish best practices and standards for web development and maintenance. This individual will also provide guidance to EurekAlert! staff and clients on best practices for updating content that help ensure that it conforms to established style conventions and guidelines.
Responsibilities
* Develops custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code using the Bootstrap framework. * Works with internal staff and external clients to help redesign existing areas of EurekAlert! and to develop new content areas; Assists with the full design process, including content analysis, prototyping, wireframing, design and development; Helps coordinate launches for new and updated content. * Updates existing areas of EurekAlert! to help modernize and simplify the code in a way that ensures that it conforms to established style conventions and guidelines. * Assists EurekAlert! staff and external clients in developing and refining practices and procedures for updating and maintaining EurekAlert! content. * Works closely with EurekAlert! web developers and editorial staff to assess technical challenges and diagnose and resolve problems as appropriate. * Responds to inquiries from EurekAlert! staff and external clients about front-end coding issues and provides answers and guidance as needed. * Works collaboratively with graphic designers to help ensure that design solutions are user-friendly and are aligned with established EurekAlert! branding and coordinate with existing website design. * Ensures delivery of effective, high-quality content and features through thorough review and testing. * Participates in discussions with the EurekAlert! technology team about best practices; Helps identify new practices and procedures for web development. * Performs other related duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate
* Extensive university or college-level experience leading to a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Three or more years of hands-on industry experience related to developing and managing web and digital products and solutions using a responsive front-end framework (Bootstrap 3 strongly preferred). * Experience designing and developing responsive website layouts. * Proficiency in core front-end web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, Javascript frameworks and libraries, etc Especially Bootstrap 3.) * Strong knowledge of Web standards and usability practices. * Meticulous attention to detail, excellent organization skills, and commitment to quality. * Excellent debugging and critical thinking skills. * Knowledge of cross-browser consistencies and quirks – testing across multiple browsers, platforms and devices, including smartphones and tablets. * Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks and work well in a tight, deadline-driven development environment. * Ability to work independently and as part of a team to develop and successfully execute projects and tasks as assigned. * Effective verbal and written communication skills. * Graphic design experience preferred. * Experience working with multimedia files (images, audio, video) preferred.
