Summary
This position is responsible for the order entry, order transcription, inter- and intradepartmental communication of the Medical-Telemetry Units. The Unit Secretary plays a key role in ensuring excellent customer satisfaction to our patients, families, and visitors.
Responsibilities
**Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:** * Transcribes physician orders * Center of communication to staff, physician, and ancillary departments * Maintaining unit logs, records and the ordering of unit supplies * In addition, the Monitor Techs ensure the accurate monitoring of cardiac patients.

Exercises good judgment and arrives at sound decisions. * Acts as a focus of communication in the Nursing Station regarding patient care activities and locations. * Documentation is accurate, complete, and legible. * Receives, greets, and directs physicians, patients, visitors, and hospital personnel arriving to or calling the Nursing Unit in a positive and friendly manner. * Answers telephone in a courteous and helpful manner. Follows through with telephone inquiries. * Calls physicians and ancillary departments as directed. * Immediately answers call lights at the desk and communicates patient requests to appropriate nursing staff. * Maintains a clean, safe, and functional working environment. Keeps work area organized. * Maintains adequate quantity of forms, materials, supplies, and equipment inventory on assigned unit. * Assists with maintaining assignment sheets, assignment board, and other communication media. * Ensures confidentiality of patients’ medical records. Ensures complete medical record goes to HIS after discharge. * Initiates, assembles, and maintains charts for all patients on the unit within one hour of admission. * Transcribes physicians’ orders, initiates all necessary forms, requisitions, and communications necessary to implement orders. Places “red dot” next to all antibiotic orders, and places order in the bin immediately. * Enters data into the computer. * Initiates and maintains patient Kardex and information contained in the same. * Files diagnostic and laboratory reports in appropriate, functional order as prescribed by hospital and unit policy. * Assures charts in appropriate order and filled with appropriate forms. * Prepares charts for transfer of medical records upon discharge or expiration of the patient. * Places patient charges accurately in order entry system. * Reports acuities to Staffing Office at assigned times. * Attends 80% of unit meetings and keeps abreast of unit changes and updates. * Completes assignment with minimal use of overtime. * Performs unit tasks/duties and/or other duties as assigned. Completes all charges accurately or observation/outpatient patients. Completes/maintains work orders as needed. * Enters patients into the Telemetry system and performs continuous, accurate observation of cardiac rhythms. * Documents rhythm strips in the patient record every four hours or more frequently if changes in the rhythm occur. * Immediately reports any changes to the assigned Registered Nurse and/or Charge Nurse. * On a daily basis, provides written report of rhythm/status of each patient to Chrage Nurse for evaluation of patient for downgrading. * Maintains telemetry log of patient rhythm strips. * Maintains log and clean Telemetry boxes/equipment. Keeps battery ends covered as instructed.
