Summary
The function of the paralegal is to assist in-house staff counsel with the preparation of information for current, potential, and pending litigation. This legal support function gathers, compiles, and summarizes information, plus performs some basic legal research assignments.
Responsibilities
* Summarizes information such as medical records, depositions, answers to interrogatories, and employment records. * Gathers and prepares information such as medical index, photographs, witness lists, exhibits, or exhibit lists. * Performs legal research on specific topics. * Retrieves case law, statutes, and regulations. * Prepares appropriate Workers Compensation Commission forms for filing. * Arranges independent medical evaluations as requested. * Prepares pleadings under direction of an attorney. * Assists with investigations. * Interviews individuals such as police officers, accident witnesses, or appraisers to assess credibility * Tracks discovery and corresponds with opposing counsel regarding discovery delays. * Requests and serves subpoenas to trial/deposition witnesses.
Ideal Candidate
* Minimum Experience / Education: * Three or more years of office work experience, preferably of an administrative and legal nature; some college preferred. Paralegal degree and current licensure required. * Communication and Collaboration Skills: * Written: Must be able to compose both routine and non-routine correspondence, including letters, memos, and reports involving both simple and moderately complex materials. * Oral: Must be able to explain both simple and moderately complex material to fellow employees, officers, and directors of companies. * Problem Solving: * Must have the ability to prepare all forms of correspondence and varied documents on a personal computer with knowledge of MS Word, Windows, Excel, Lotus, OutLook, and other software including stock option plan administration. Must possess the ability to problem solve by performing basic legal research.
