Summary
The Reference Supervisor plans and organizes activities related to the investigation of antibodies, red cell phenotyping and complex serologic workups in order to provide the most compatible blood products to patients. Serves as a technical resource to staff. Recognized as an expert within the institution and externally by physicians, medical staff, faculty, hospital staff, laboratory staff and researchers.
Responsibilities
Regularly gives in-service education sessions at national and/or regional meetings. Takes a leadership role in the education of students and other professional staff including clinical laboratory scientists, pathology residents, fellows, scholars and researchers. Serves as an expert technical resource for internal and external customers. Develops standard operating procedures their area. Keeps up-to-date with changes in the field and proposes new and innovative technologies to augment service.
Ideal Candidate
* **Minimum Qualifications:** Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. * **Education:** Technical knowledge of transfusion services normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology and successful completion of a supervised one-year clinical internship. Specialist in Blood Banking or equivalent, advanced training, specialized training or coursework is required. * **Experience:** A minimum of 5 years experience in transfusion services, at least one of which as a senior medical technologist, preferably in an accredited AABB reference lab, to be able function as an expert in the field. **License/Certification:** * Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) and SBB (Specialty in Blood Bank) Certification * Med Tech (ASCP) SBB, acceptable **Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:** * Ability to perform advanced testing methodologies, exercise expert judgement, interpret and correlate results with clinical conditions, recognize problems or anomalies in testing and take appropriate action. * Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice related to technical methodologies, procedures and/or instruments. * Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions and interpret results * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing * Ability to develop financial budgets and manage expenses * Ability to plan, organize, develop tactical plans and set priorities * Ability to solve problems and identify solutions * Ability to supervise, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate work results * Ability to work effectively both as a team player and leader * Knowledge of mathematics general science and laboratory techniques
