Summary
The **Open Access Journal Development Editor** will be responsible for the success and development of a defined set of journals published under the SpringerOpen brand. This involves prioritisation of journals for development and the setting and implementation of journal plans accordingly, as well as supporting key stakeholders (Editors, authors, reviewers, and societies) with publishing matters. The aim of this role is to optimise publishing service, optimise commercial opportunities and increase submissions and publications across the portfolio.
Responsibilities
**Journal development** * Prioritise journals for development or maintenance in line with company strategy * Work alongside Editors/Editorial Board members to increase journal visibility, and reputation within the field. * Define key objectives per journal, and devise and implement journal development plans accordingly, amending as required. * Ensure Editorial Boards are representative of subject area, customer geography/demographics, and include relevant geographic and emerging markets **Increase market share (submissions and citations)** * Work with internal and external Editors, and related contacts, to increase submissions. * Drive the commissioning of content, as per journal development plans. * Ensure appropriate representation in indexing services and work to ensure journals are performing at level for acceptance by selective services. * Cooperate closely with Marketing to ensure that journals receive appropriate promotion (e.g. blurbs, press releases, Twitter etc.) **Relationship management** * Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with Springer Research colleagues, Editors-in-Chief, Society contacts, Editorial Board Members and other stakeholders. * Contribute to Editorial Board meetings by providing analyses, present case studies, support reporting etc. * Resolve queries and correspond with Editors by email, phone and in person, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion and escalated when required. * Build relationships with key contacts and opinion leaders within the region and fields the journals operate in **Journal management** * Monitor submissions and copy flow procedures to optimise manuscript flow. Pre-empt issues and work with the Editorial Office as well as internal and external Editors to resolve. * Oversee key stages in a journal’s life-cycle (e.g. journal set-up and launch) and ensure these stages are completed for your portfolio in the expected timeframes. * Support and maintain journal websites and associated internal systems and processes to ensure information is accurate and up-to-date. * Support the set-up of thematic series and article collections, ensuring internal teams are notified of upcoming series and that promotional information is included on the journal websites. * Handle contract renewals and honorarium negotiations in a timely fashion, consulting with relevant colleagues from the Open Research Group and Springer Research Group as necessary. **Commercial and marketing opportunities** * Represent the company at scientific conferences where required to improve market knowledge, network within the community, receive feedback and to promote SpringerOpen journals and open access. * Ensure journals are appropriately represented through all relevant avenues e.g. mailings, conferences, marketing exchanges. **Journal acquisitions** * Assist with generating leads and opportunities for journal acquisitions with colleagues from the Open Research Group and Springer Research Group where required
Ideal Candidate
* Educated to degree level * Interest in open access and STM publishing * Knowledge of publishing process and related matters * Excellent communication and influencing skills * Strong organizational skills, including proven ability to consistently meet deadlines * Takes ownership to drive and complete tasks * Strong analytical skills * Positive and proactive approach to problem solving * Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels * Customer focused * Strong attention to detail * High level of computer literacy (including MS Office, Outlook and internet browsers) * Experience with developing and maintaining good relationships/partnerships with external contacts * Previous experience working in the STM publishing industry preferred
