Summary
Scientific American seeks an experienced News Editor to lead the magazine’s digital fast-response team. We are the world’s most authoritative popular science media outlet with ambitions to expand our journalism on all platforms to better serve our audience of science enthusiasts and thought leaders--now more than 9 million globally and growing quickly. The news editor will play a key role in shaping our future as a digital enterprise The news editor will supervise our fast-response team, direct coverage of breaking news, make assignments to staff and freelancer writers, and edit stories for all platforms (digital and print). The successful candidate will be able to produce polished copy on a short deadline, write great headlines and work smoothly with our award-winning editorial team on strategy and execution. Scientific American is at the heart of Nature Publishing Group’s consumer media division. As the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States, Scientific American has been bringing its readers unique insights about developments in science and technology since 1845.
Responsibilities
* Manages news/fast-response content operations, including all related story planning, meetings and schedules * Edits daily news copy and reviews partner content for publication, including headlines; top edits “Advances” (news) section of the monthly print edition.. * Supervises associate editors, Advances editor and Spanish-language editor. * Works with the digital content manager and engagement editor to promote news content across all channels. * Works with the management team to set top-level goals and strategies for editorial performance across the SA brand.
Ideal Candidate
* College degree * 6+ years writing and editing news and working on digital platforms * Fluency with online media analytics * Fluency with and enthusiasm for major issues and findings in major science topics and fields. * Fast, strong short-form editing and writing. * Strong skills in writing clear, accurate and engaging headlines and sub headings. * Strong communication and management skills. * Understanding of how to make news and set a national and international news agenda. * Must be able to handle a heavy load, meet deadlines and work in our Manhattan offices.
