Summary
To support the Director of Media and Communications, Humanitarian Response, in planning and executing integrated media, communications and messaging strategies that will position Save the Children as a leader in humanitarian response. These communications efforts will be designed to inform and engage the American public, policymakers, Save the Children donors and supporters and other key stakeholders about the organization’s humanitarian response programs, advocacy campaigns, corporate marketing partnerships and related activities, and to create a successful environment for advocacy, fundraising and engagement campaigns.
Responsibilities
* Provide support to the Director, Media and Communications, Humanitarian Response in developing and implementing a comprehensive, integrated media and communications plan focused on humanitarian issues which will generate awareness and engagement among target audiences. (10%) * Lead the media outreach efforts for breaking emergencies and proactive humanitarian media campaigns, developing media plans and story angles, building and maintaining traditional and social media relationships and generating print, broadcast and online coverage for our media and advocacy campaigns. Deploy to emergency sites, as needed, to manage media outreach, oversee multimedia collection and accompany CEO, celebrity spokespeople and corporate and foundation partners. (45%) * Serve as primary writer and editor for Humanitarian Response media messaging, developing press releases, media advisories, Q&A documents, fact sheets, op-eds, blog posts and other social media content. Assist in preparing talking points and in training senior agency spokespeople for media and public speaking engagements. (35%) * Liaise with humanitarian response colleagues on the SC US Disaster and Humanitarian Response team as well as the Global Media Unit, to ensure coordination between media and response efforts. (10%)
Ideal Candidate
**Background and Experience:** * A minimum of five to nine years of experience handling media and advocacy communications required. * With at least two years of experience working in a developing countries and/or on emergency response. * Proven track record of generating traditional and social media coverage of natural disasters and humanitarian crises. * Understanding of refugee, global health and poverty issues and experience in working at a nongovernmental organization is strongly desired. * Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree and additional language fluency a plus. * Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally. **Knowledge Skills and Behaviors:** * Superior media relations and writing skills across traditional and new media platforms required. * Ability to produce compelling media products such as press releases, key messages/speaking points and Q&As. * Strong oral communications skills and excellent judgment, in complex and fast-developing situations. * Ability to act as on-camera spokesperson in emergency response situations and to train spokespeople for interviews during breaking emergencies. * Excellent relationships with members of traditional and social media and an ability to build new relationships where needed. * Proven ability to develop and execute communications messaging and strategies across multimedia platforms. * Ability to synthesize and translate complex issues into accessible and compelling content. * Creative thinker, problem solver and motivated team player. * Adaptability and proven ability to absorb and gather new information and turn around projects quickly and effectively under pressure. * An initiative-taking, proactive, inspiring attitude with the ability to manage and prioritize workload and solve problems quickly. * Prefer candidate with experience working in diverse cultures and developing countries. * Multimedia production experience is a plus.
