The San Francisco Chronicle has an immediate opening for an experienced, energetic and creative Political Reporter. Someone who can break news, spot trends and set agendas on the Bay Area, state and national levels. The right candidate is a reporter who has a strong voice with a distinctive point of view. Can write a smart story about a state Assembly campaign one day and the 2016 presidential campaign the next. Our focus is on how politics plays out for a Bay Area audience, but we’re not provincial. We’re also not about the horse race: We explain to readers why politics matters, not why someone is leading the race by 3 points.

- Tell stories that matter - Provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues - Plan and execute daily multimedia content/stories about issues, trends and people in the local, state and federal government - Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple and emerging platforms - Work collaboratively both inside and across departments - Balance daily deadline journalism with ambitious enterprise project reporting

- BA in Journalism, Media, Communications or related field - At least 3-5 years’ experience reporting for a daily newspaper, magazine or website - Demonstrated knowledge of local and California government politics in relation to immigration, the economy, environment, health and education - The ability to adapt to a fast-changing news environment and provide support at critical times - Experience creating stories in different forms - Experience holding institutional powers accountable - Advanced knowledge of social media and how to engage fan base on digital platforms in the public space
