Safe Horizon is the largest victims’ services agency in the United States, touching the lives of more than 250,000 children, adults, and families affected by crime and abuse throughout New York City each year.
Responsibilities
- Work with children from 6 weeks to 12 years of age in a supportive, educationally-oriented environment that serves children in a court setting; - Maintain registry of all children in the care of the Children’s Center; - Make referrals and connections to parents to take advantage of other Safe Horizon programs, other community-based organizations, programs, and entitlements; - Fill out funder intake forms, federal food program meal plans, registration forms, statistics, and other required forms accurately, thoroughly, and timely; - Improve literacy for school age children and language development for pre-school children by speaking with the children and by overseeing children’s activities, including, but not limited to: stories, use of computer software, educational toys and games, arts and crafts, dance, and writing; - Assist the Head Teacher with curriculum and lesson plan development within the framework of the monthly theme provided by Educational Director; and - Provide meals and snacks to children in accordance to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) requirements and regulations.
Ideal Candidate
- Understanding of basics of child development from birth to age 12; - Ability to relate to caregivers and children who are under stress; - Ability to work with difficult population which requires a high level of social skills, maturity, and confidence in addition to being nurturing and flexible, yet firm and in charge; - Ability to communicate effectively in English (speaking and writing); and - Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet. Education: Required: - High school diploma - Two years of early childhood experience Desirable: - AA and/or achievement of the CDA credential. - Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred - Classroom experience Other: - Training for CPR, DOHMH requirements and regulations, working with Special Education youth, and children who were witnesses to violence and/or abuse will be provided by Safe Horizon. - Must meet all licensing and screening requirements, including but not limited to: - Fingerprinting - Registration with the State Central Registry of Child Abuse and Maltreatment - Pass a pre-employment physical granting medical permission to work with small children, which includes proof of immunizations, that he/she is free from communicable diseases, and successful passing of a PPD test for tuberculosis - Pass an annual physical Requirements/Other All prospective job candidates must meet screening requirements, which may include a background check, credit check, finger printing and State Central Registry clearance.
