IT Systems Engineer -- Linux and Windows Administration

**As an IT Systems Engineer** * You'll have a key role in how our systems function at Progressive. * Using your strong knowledge of system architecture and operations, you'll build and maintain the technical infrastructure and platforms that support our systems. * In addition to handling various operational tasks like the installation of hardware and software, you will troubleshoot issues related to our distributed hosting environments, including associated technologies utilized to support our enterprise business systems and data center operations. * You will also provide operational support for various projects involving enterprise-wide infrastructures and IT operations.

**Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed to Be Successful:** * Associate's degree in Information Technology, Telecommunications, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Math or related field of study * 4 years working with operating system hardware and/or software components in a large IT environment with many categories of devices, infrastructures and operating systems * In lieu of a degree, 6 years related experience working with operating system hardware and/or software components in a large IT environment with many categories of devices, infrastructures and operating systems * In-depth knowledge of IT operations, such as operating systems components, utilities, production schedulers and system environment hardware components (e.g., CPU, disk and tape technologies) * Knowledge of various corporate security rules, legal and regulatory obligations such as PCI, SOX or similar standards * Knowledge of vendor software integration and interaction patterns * Advanced technical troubleshooting, diagnosing and problem solving skills * Analyzes data from various sources to determine next steps * Interpersonal skills with the ability to work with various levels of management and external vendors * Organization skills and ability to work on multiple projects and/or assignments simultaneously * Ability to coach and help others learn knowledge or skills in a specific area * Listening, verbal and written communications skills * Uses a variety of techniques to stay current with information technology trends and operational concepts and tools for solving technical problems **Preferred Skills:** * 3+ years working with Linux operating system hardware and/or software components in a large IT environment with many categories of devices and infrastructures. * In lieu of a degree, 6+ years working with Linux operating system hardware and/or software components in a large IT environment with many categories of devices and infrastructures. * System Administration experience in Windows OS. * Demonstrated ability to coach and help others learn knowledge or skills in a specific area * Perform administration of the Redhat Enterprise Linux & Oracle Linux operating system environments including servers, file systems, backups, applications, account and user maintenance, upgrades and repairs. * Proficient in shell scripting, vi and UNIX command syntax; high demand based, service oriented environment on UNIX/Windows. * Experience in trouble shooting and solving complex technical problems. * Monitor performance and reliability. Proactively identify potential problems and make recommendations for upgrades. * Manage files and directories from the command line to performing remote connections and file transfers. * Applying Security Management practices to Linux servers. * View and modify file and directory permissions. * Working knowledge of the architecture, implementation, and support of an enterprise data warehouse. * Rotational on-call to provide 24X7 support.
