Summary
The Department of Industrial Design in the School of Design at Pratt Institute invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank to begin Fall 2016. Located on Pratt’s historic 25-acre campus in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, the Department of Industrial Design is a leading provider of both undergraduate and graduate education in the field. The department currently offers 2 programs: a 60-credit M.I.D; and a 126-credit B.I.D. The department’s faculty includes highly regarded, award winning professional designers and academics. We seek applicants with a broad vision of the future of the design field and the ability to articulate that vision. Candidates must demonstrate familiarity with a critical and speculative design approach, embrace the transdisciplinary nature of design, and prove commitment to sustainability and social innovation. Candidates must be engaged in scholarly and professional work, and be willing to participate in collaborative projects with other disciplines within Pratt Institute and demonstrate in all of their interactions a level of cultural competence. As Pratt is both a place of international and national renown located in New York, it is imperative that faculty resonate with the Institute’s urban and international cultural contexts.
Responsibilities
* Develop and teach design courses, including design studios and selected support courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as thesis studios. * Full-time teaching load is the equivalent of three courses each fall and spring semester. * Participate in curriculum development and other departmental projects and activities. * Advise and mentor students. * Participate in committee work and other service to the department, school and community. * Contribute to developing a strong culture of intellectual life and design research in the department, integrating diversity and related topics as appropriate. * Develop and maintain personal scholarly and professional standing in the design field. * Perform other related activities as required. * Demonstrate sensitivity to diversity, a respect for differences and the dignity of others.
Ideal Candidate
**QUALIFICATIONS:** We require a Master’s degree in design as well as demonstrated teaching skills. Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ teaching experience, preferably at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; significant professional experience within the field; and a proven record of substantial scholarly and creative activity. International work experience and teaching record are considered pluses. Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, gender identity, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.
