Summary
Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, Auxiliary Operators operate and monitor auxiliary equipment and systems that support the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally sound production of export steam and electricity.
Responsibilities
* Monitors systems and equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures * Communicates with the Shift Supervisor and Control Room Operator about equipment start and stop time, abnormal conditions and corrective actions, equipment checks and conditions found * Operates system, equipment, and components during start-up, run, shutdown and standby mode in accordance with standard operating procedures * Perform operational diagnostic and analytical functions on systems, equipment and components * Isolates and restores system, equipment, and components strictly adhering to the work scope and applicable procedures and practices * Performs administrative functions in support of work unit such as timekeeping, materials support, cost monitoring, and scheduling and quality control/quality assurance. * Uses plant computer systems to monitor work backlog and input work order data * Performs data collection and maintain proper logs * Adheres to all safety and environmental rules and regulations * Performs emergency response activities as required * Performs general housekeeping functions as necessary * Operates Company vehicles and equipment **Additional Responsibilities/Job Expectations** * Operate from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision. * Perform duties independently with only general direction given. * Make decisions within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines. * Execute on recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm. * Perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, and in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. * Effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant employees relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance. * Provide suggestions for plant improvements. * Perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio. * Has the responsibility to both the customer and co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer’s needs are being met.
Ideal Candidate
**Education and Experience** * High school diploma, GED or equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics and grammar. * 1 year experience in plant operations or a related field. * Must successfully receive a "recommended" rating on the NRG Pre-Employment Skills Assessment Test. **Knowledge/Skills** * Must be safety and environmentally conscientious. * Must possess good oral and written communications skills. * Team skills are a must. **Physical Requirement s and Working Conditions** * Ability to work rotating shiftwork, holidays, weekends and overtime * Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner * Ability to interpret and apply instructions, specifications, blueprints and procedures * Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and time management skills * Ability to read, write and speak the English language * Ability to handle multiple task and meets stringent deadlines * Ability to perform work both indoors and outdoors, requiring continuous physical activity, sometimes of a strenuous an stressful nature * Ability to operate mobile power equipment safely * Ability to work in enclosed vessels or confined spaces * Ability to use various hand/power driven and hydraulic tools and machinery * Ability to use arms, legs, feet, and hands in a fully coordinated manner * Ability to climb ladders, bend, twist, kneel, crawl, pull/push and lift up to 50 pounds, stand, walk and squat for extended periods of time * Ability to work on or around energized electrical equipment * Ability to work at elevated heights including scaffolding * Ability to ascend 10 stories of stairs unassisted (~125 ft elevation) * Ability to work alone in remote areas * Ability to work in areas with limited lighting * Ability to work in extreme temperatures ranging from very cold to very hot * Possess good hearing and vision * Ability to work in areas that may be noisy and dirty * Ability to wear a respirator and other job related personal protective equipment (PPE) * Ability to meet (on an annual basis) appropriate physical evaluations identified by NRG as prerequisites to performing certain task and training activities * Ability to learn complex plant systems and communicate knowledge * Ability to progress and advance through operation’s positions
