Summary
Plans, organizes and manages the Health Information Management Department, in the area of coding and DRG assignment.
Responsibilities
1. Validates coding of Inpatient and works with coders to achieve highest coding accuracy rates. 2. Provides feedback to Coders’ on reason for change referring them to appropriate educational sources if applicable. 3. Validates using the SMART program 30-40 charts per day. 4. Provides information to Assistant Director Coding and Inpatient Coding Manager on patterns of coding errors resulting in any variance directly impacting finances. Assists in formulating internal guidelines to ensure future accuracy. 5. Identify all documentation needs for DRG billing and coding. Works with Documentation Improvement Specialist to identify other documentation needs. 6. Provides coding accuracy reports to the Vice President of HIM, Assistant Director /Coding and Inpatient Coding Manager on a monthly basis. 7. Presents educational material at weekly in-service for coding staff North and South as it relates to updates, MS- DRG , APR-DRG and AP-DRGs Conducts focused in-service to coding staff on problem areas or targeted DRGs to instill Quality Assurance and Performance. 8. Monitors the performance of outside agencies contracted to review coding for DRG Compliance. 9. Assist Manager in performing annual evaluations of all Coders’ performance and productivity. 10. Assists Manager in preparation of Department policies and procedures in accordance with Departmental, Hospital and regulatory agencies. 11. Attends seminar and reviews current literature to maintain up-to-date knowledge required for Coding Compliance. 12. Trains new Coders by validating accuracy and providing feedback to them. Advises Inpatient Coding Manager of their progress. 13. Assists Inpatient Coding Manger with special projects as needed. 14. Provides back-up coding when necessary and/or as determined by Manager or Assistant Director. 15. Performs related duties, as required.
Ideal Candidate
* Qualifications- * Physical Demands: Requires ability to be available for conference calls and emergent meetings. Must be able to complete work in queue by defined deadline and under pressure. Must be able to sit for long periods of time. * • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration, Nursing, or a related field, required. * • RHIA, RHIT or RN, CCS, required. * • Minimum of two (2) years inpatient coding experience, required. * • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
