VP of Core Technology

We’re looking for an amazing VP of Core Tech build and lead our data services organization. Data is the core of everything we do at Moz. It’s our core asset. Our data-first strategy recognizes that proprietary, hard-to-get data sets are what keep customers coming back to Moz and companies building software on our APIs. The more data we collect, the more recommendations we can derive and give to our fans. This position requires experience designing, operating, and maintaining distributed systems to ingest, process and serve data, as well as excellent cross-organizational leadership and team-building skills. You will create a common framework for serving and commercializing data, both big and small. You will create interfaces that make complex processes seem simple, and reduce the cost of experimentation. Your customers are internal Moz product groups, as well as external API customers. You know how to make services that engineers love to use. * **Strategic, cross**-organizational leadership. You will partner cross-organizationally to lead Moz’s next gen shared platforms and big data services strategy. Your charter is to speed up innovation and growth across Moz without compromising scalability or security. You will foster an environment of collaboration, creativity, excellence in engineering, and business literacy. * **Bring Order to Data Chaos**. Moz gathers data from all over the web through many different services and with different use-cases. You excel at designing systems to gather, process, and serve petabytes of data to internal and external customers through well documented, secure APIs. You’ll take our different data services and create a common framework and interface that improves reliability, security, makes it easy to commercialize our data, and lowers the cost of experimentation. * **Big Data Processing**. Anyone can gather lots of data; You know how to make it insightful, fresh, and accurate. You’ve designed, built, and operated distributed parallel systems running on multiple (60+) nodes to generate meaningful insights from petabytes of data. You relish managing trade offs of data volume, freshness, and quality. * **Team Building**. You’re a creative and expert recruiter with a large network of highly technical engineers. Managing and growing TAGFEE engineering leaders motivates you to constantly improve your leadership skills and demonstrate great management every day. **Minimum Qualifications:** * Proven track record building and maintaining complex data systems. Deep background and expertise in distributed systems, large scale data processing, scalable software architectures etc. You understand scale in all its forms and have successfully implemented strategies to deal with it. (BigTable/Hadoop/HBase) * Love of strategy and innovation, paired with the ability to deliver technology solutions that move the business forward. * Demonstrated success at building high performing, diverse teams who love what they do and share a passion for serving customers. * Experience leading multiple service-oriented shared infrastructure / platforms through all phases, from inception to end of life. * A collaborative leadership style, with demonstrated strength working across teams. **Desirable qualifications** * Graduate degree in computer science with focus on Systems/Distributed Systems. * Patents related to platforms and large scale systems. * Experience speaking at public events and evangelizing technology. * 7+ years of experience in building large scale platforms and shared systems.
