Communications Manager

Mount Angel Abbey is a private Roman Catholic seminary, university, and community of Benedictine monks near the city of Mt. Angel, Oregon, United States.

General Summary:

Reports to the Director of Development and collaborates with colleagues and monks. Develops and implements a communications strategy and programs that inspire interest affection and support for the mission of Mound Angel Abbey. Responsible for varied and integrated communications products and services, including: magazine, newsletter, direct mail, event collateral, web and online communications, photography, videography, media relations and marketing

Essential Functions:

• Manage the development, design and execution of the overall communication program that serves Mount Angel Abbey and the Abbey Foundation of Oregon.

• Raise the Abbey’s visibility and enhance its reputation, serving as a key communications strategist.

• Articulate the Abbey’s mission and the monks’ way of life with sensitivity and verve.

• Communicate a clear vision and consistent messages to external and internal stakeholders including the public, Catholic community, donors, alumni, friends, employees and students.

• Oversee the Communications budget and resource allocations, and manage external contractors and vendors.

• Manage vendors, such as writers, photographers, videographers and designers.

• Create and communicate well-organized plans.

• Coordinate printing and mail house projects with Abbey Press Services.

• Complete work using superior writing, editing, graphic design, interviewing and project management skills, as well as tact, diplomacy and excellent judgment.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience, training and education.

• Five (5) years of experience in communications or related field.

• Exceptional written, editorial and oral communication skills.

• Superior organizational and time management skills.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Proven experience with web, social media, and other electronic communications.

• Graphic design and media relations proficiency, preferred.

• Ability to collaborate effectively with others.

• Ability to express clearly and persuasively the mission and impact of Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary.

• Ability to manage program budget.

• Computer proficiency required. Ability to use project management and graphic design software, preferred.

• Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.

• Commitment to building positive relationships with colleagues, vendors, and constituents.

• Working knowledge of the Catholic Church. An understanding of a Catholic Abbey and Seminary preferred.

• Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner which facilitates positive working relationships with customers, monks, co-workers and management.

• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job
