Responsibilities
The Department of Civil Engineering at Montana State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in engineering mechanics at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Primary duties and responsibilities consist of teaching, research and service/outreach. Teaching duties include undergraduate and graduate engineering mechanics courses with enrollment composed primarily of Civil and Mechanical Engineering students. Research responsibilities consist of developing an internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program in engineering mechanics with a connection to snow science. Candidates considered at the Associate Professor level will be expected to assume an immediate leadership role and foster growth in snow mechanics and cold environment research. Duties and Responsibilities - Instruct undergraduate and graduate students in engineering mechanics and related subjects - Advise undergraduate students in the civil engineering curriculum - Advise graduate students appropriate to the interest and research direction of the applicant - Participate in, promote and further develop the snow mechanics undergraduate and graduate programs - Develop an internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program - Produce scholarly works - Participate in professional/service/outreach activities - Teach in a diverse University community and help students from diverse backgrounds succeed - Candidates considered at the Associate Professor level will be expected to assume an immediate leadership role and foster growth in snow mechanics and cold environment research
Ideal Candidate
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills 1. PhD in a discipline appropriate to engineering mechanics 2. Demonstrated scholarly research achievement 3. Demonstrated excellence in communication 4. For appointment at the Associate level, demonstrated prior performance commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills 1. Academic and/or professional experience 2. Research experience in engineering mechanics topics relevant to the cryosphere, with particular preference for snow and ice mechanics 3. Demonstrated leadership role in engineering undergraduate and graduate program development 4. Demonstrated commitment to student, faculty and staff diversity 5. Registration as a Professional Engineer or ability to become registered within five years from date of employment The Successful Candidate Will - Be a self-starter - Have strong organizational skills and the ability to innovate - Have excellent leadership and interpersonal skills - Possess the ability to work productively with limited supervision - Possess good decision-making abilities - Work effectively with a broad range of diverse constituencies, including students, parents, staff, faculty, administrators and the public - Positively contribute to the undergraduate and graduate teaching missions of the department and college
