Summary

The Communications Manager provides strategic and tactical public affairs support to Marathon Petroleum Company corporate and business unit communications. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator, both written and verbal, with significant public relations experience in speech writing, financial writing, on-camera and electronic/print media. Business writing experience, especially in financial reporting, is a key competency of this position. The Communications Manager must be able to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously and work collaboratively with employees in a wide variety of positions within the company, including members of the executive management team.

This position requires the ability to work effectively with all levels of MPC’s organization, as well as a broad range of external audiences and stakeholders. This position requires a high degree of organizational skill and the ability to anticipate frequently changing business conditions and meet tight deadlines. Creativity, analytical skills, sound judgment and a desire to learn about the energy industry are important qualities for the candidate seeking this position.

Responsibilities
  • Writes, edits and secures management approval for written materials, including those associated with quarterly financial earnings, annual reports, news releases, executive presentations, corporate advertising and other corporate communications materials.

  • Contributes to internal communications, including publications and social media, by providing story ideas, themes and approaches. Conducts interviews while working with designated publication editors and graphic design personnel.

  • Develops organized techniques for writing projects best suited to the level and interest of the specific audiences and the particular media to be used.

  • Conducts certain liaison activities with suppliers, readers and company personnel; responds to media inquiries and may act as a company spokesperson during routine and emergency situations.

Ideal Candidate
  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s desirable
  • Major: Communications, public relations, journalism or other relevant fields of study
  • Computer Proficiencies: Microsoft Office products

Work Experience and Specific Skills:

  • Seven to ten years of corporate or agency public relations experience with emphasis on media relations/external communications and issue management desired.
  • The ideal candidate has experience in financial communications within a Fortune 25 company, preferably in the oil and gas industry.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous crisis communication experience preferred.
  • Proficient analytical, problem-solving, organization, creativity, grammar and writing skills. Familiarity with AP style a plus.
  • Experience in issues related to energy, economics, the environment, and corporate citizenship preferred.
