Summary
Participates on a team that reports the financial results of a $95+ billion asset multi-entity publicly traded company. As a leader and a team member, the Supervising Senior Accountant assists management by actively participating in the coordination, execution and review of bank regulatory filings, filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), shareholder and Board of Directors Reports as well as various internal reports. This individual also provides leadership and training of less experienced staff in areas such as the interpretation of regulatory guidelines, SEC reporting disclosures, and analyses of financial results, including reviewing the work of staff members.
Responsibilities
* Actively participates in the planning, execution and review of financial statements for M&T Bank Corporation (“M&T”) and subsidiaries, including the Annual Report to Shareholders, filing of Forms 10-K and 10-Q with the SEC, various regulatory filings (Call Reports, FRY-9C) and M&T’s quarterly earnings releases. * Actively participates in the monthly closing of the general ledger, interpreting and analyzing financial results and presenting conclusions to Senior Management. * This requires the use of effective communication skills (verbal and written), creative problem solving skills and the ability to distinguish pertinent facts and comprehend complex subject matter. * Providing direction to staff in order to meet deadlines is also required. * Ensure reports and related disclosures are completed in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, M&T accounting policies, SEC disclosure requirements and bank regulatory guidelines, with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness. * This individual is expected to utilize available authoritative resources (FASB, Call Report Instructions, SEC guide, etc.) to adequately support conclusions and reporting treatments. * Supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. * This would include serving as a subject matter expert and advisor with respect to accounting and financial reporting/disclosure issues. * Shares knowledge and experience with the department and other members of the Company in order to efficiently provide services to internal and external customers. * Exhibit a leadership role in department matters (ie. conducting department meetings, acting as a liaison between analysts and management, apprising management of departmental issues). Foster a positive and professional working environment. * Participate in regular department management meetings and strategic planning sessions. * Evaluate performance of staff regularly as part of the performance appraisal process. * This includes preparing and delivering evaluations to less experienced staff based on both specific experiences and through gathering comments from department management. * Assist the management team with managing, maintaining, and continually working to improve the accounting, reporting and internal control systems used to collect, compile and report the financial information needed by the Company’s staff and management. * Coordinate participation in special projects relating to accounting and financial reporting. * Actively participate in on-campus and in-office recruiting efforts. * This position requires the person to work independently with minimal guidance from managers, respond well to tight deadlines, effectively multi-task and take ownership of assignments. * This position also requires close interaction with management team on various departmental matters, including personnel decisions. * The number of analysts in the department ranges from between 15 and 20. * At any point in time, the individual in this position could be supervising several staff members. * This position requires regular interaction with department personnel, personnel from other departments and outside auditors or regulators in order to gather information, provide advice and respond to inquiries. * Contact with Senior Management in the Finance division is frequent. * Provide supervision and guidance to analysts on a daily basis. * It is expected that this individual will foster a cooperative atmosphere and work to further develop the communication, analytical and research skills of the less experienced analysts. * This would include developing and promoting strong capabilities in: workpaper preparation and documentation; data verification; proofreading; and an understanding of accounting and reporting requirements.
Ideal Candidate
* Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or the equivalent in work experience. * MBA and/or CPA preferred. * Four or more years accounting experience with reporting responsibilities in a supervisory role. * Financial institution experience desirable. * Working knowledge of SEC requirements with focus on Forms 10-K and 10-Q, and of bank regulatory reporting (Call Reports/FFIEC, etc.). * Proficiency in Microsoft Excel essential. * General knowledge of personal computers, including a working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems. * Solid understanding of business and accounting/financial reporting processes, systems and controls. * Working knowledge of Hyperion Financial Management financial reporting software and other bank-specific application systems. * Ability to interact effectively with all levels of management and outsiders (bank operations personnel, independent accountants, legal counsel, bank regulators and Senior Management). * Ability to both work independently and as part of a team, set goals and objectives, and meet deadlines. * Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. * Superior problem solving skills.
