Summary
Conceptualize, design, develop and test durable solutions of various mechanical components, mechanical assemblies, and optical assemblies used in medical and industrial imaging systems. Design mechanical test fixtures and tooling, design of test procedures, and other manufacturing support functions required to consistently produce mechanical and/or opto/mechanical assemblies. Provide analytical support of mechanical designs to the development teams. Perform research and development of new mechanical and opto/mechanical technology for use in future products.
Responsibilities
* Perform various forms of analysis.These analyses should include temperature, FEA, tolerance, torque values, etc. * Determine methods of communicating the analytical results with the rest of the Engineering staff. * Determine, where appropriate, empirical methods, to validate analytical models.If necessary, update the model assumptions and/or empirical methods to correlate the results. * Research and Development * Research and develop new mechanical, opto/mechanical, and materials technology for use in future and existing KSI products. * Project Development Teams * Provide design assistance and analysis for the Engineering and Manufacturing personnel during the various design phases. * Contribute design ideas, constraints, trade-offs, and concerns to the Project Managers * Transform ideas into mechanical, optical, component, and assembly drawings * Communicate with purchasing and vendors for new processes and capabilities required for new designs. * Participate in and/or perform the critical reviewer function during design reviews. Identify holes, concerns, and possible problems associated with the design and/or manufacturing processes. * Sustaining Support * Provide sustaining support for existing product lines. This may include analysis of field issues and/or analysis of manufacturing issues. * Determine validation test requirements to isolate and help correct sustaining problems. * Determine test methods and procedures for new requirements. * Documentation changes. * General Engineering * Provide support and technical direction for the generation and maintenance of the Design Assurance Checks for mechanical and opto/mechanical designs. * Regular attendance is an essential job function. * Will spend part of his/her time as a member of continuous improvement teams undertaking projects and seeking ways to improve the quality of KSI’s products and services **Additional Responsibilities:** * Quality – all activities associated with this position must be performed with the highest level of quality standards recognizing that the products are used in the medical industry. * Durability – all activities associated with this position must address the long-term durability of the device and where appropriate must consider the long-term durability even after multiple sterilizations and sterilization methods. * Efficacy – all activities associated with this position must consider the devices final application; ergonomics, interaction of the device with the physician, and device operation during usage are all components of efficacy. * Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Ideal Candidate
**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:** * Experience using computer aided drafting (CAD) software, preferably SolidWorks. * Experience using Computer-aided FEA and thermal analysis tools. * Ability to perform tolerance studies on assembly components using CAD capabilities and standard inspection and measuring tools, familiarity with GD&T. * Basic understanding of optical design formulas, optical materials, coatings, and mechanical constraints of opto/mechanical designs, adhesives, and sealing techniques. * Knowledgeable of machining operations, metal finishes, and finishing. * Familiarity with standard mechanical drawing requirements **Education and Experience:** * Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related fields with 2-5 years of experience in mechanical and opto/mechanical design or a MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related fields with 0-2 years of experience in mechanical and opto/mechanical design. * Familiarity with Endoscopy a plus **Physical & Mental Requirements:** * Ability to sit for extended periods (during meetings or computer work) * Ability to lift video equipment (approx. 20 lbs) * Ability to work with hand tools during prototype assembly. **Training Requirements:** * Injury and Illness Prevention Program; annually - OSHA requirement * Quality System training * Bloodborne Pathogen; annually – OSHA requirement * Job Specific - In house requirement **Supervisory Responsibilities:** * None **Level of Supervision Required:** * The department manager develops general goals for the employee at the yearly review cycles, which are derived from the overall company goals. * Tasks are derived from these general goals by the employee and reviewed and accepted by the department manager. * Detail peer review of work accomplished is required and scheduled as required. * Minimum monthly one-on-one meetings with department manager. **Interface:** * Project Engineers and Project Managers for mechanical and opto/mechanical design. * Manufacturing Engineers for manufacturability issues regarding design implementation * Purchasing and vendors to qualify Mechanical and Optical vendors for new processes and procedures and to resolve issues in the fabrication of mechanical and opto/mechanical.
