Summary
As part of the Newell Brands Materials & Applied Sciences team, the Senior Materials Engineer, Coatings will work on a diverse set of leading consumer product brands including Rubbermaid, Calphalon, Graco and Contigo. The Senior Materials Engineer, Coatings is responsible for identifying and developing new coating technologies that meet consumer needs, while working within a cross-functional New Product Development (NPD) team. Some U.S. and global travel is required.
Responsibilities
* Lead the materials selection and evaluation of new coatings technologies on NPD projects from conception through product launch while meeting performance, cost and timeline targets. * Identify new coating innovations that address unmet consumer needs through independent research, partnering with key suppliers and developing a network of research institutions. * Lead coatings training development and delivery for the R&D organization. * Identify and showcase new coatings technologies to cross-functional audiences. * Solve quality issues through an understanding of first principles, experimental design and the use of analytical equipment.
Ideal Candidate
* Track record of successfully driving R&D projects to meet cost, performance and timeline requirements. * Demonstrates creativity, innovation and the ability to drive the implementation of own novel ideas. * Ability to solve complex problems using first principle analysis, structured problem solving and statistical tools (e.g. thought maps, Design of Experiments). * Ability to communicate complex concepts verbally and in writing to cross-functional audiences and senior leadership. * Conduct experiments, operate and interpret data using analytical equipment such as SEM, profilometer, microscopy, XPS, AFM, DSC and more. * Track record of working effectively with other disciplines including marketing, industrial design, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain. * Identification of intellectual property (IP) opportunities through IP and competitive landscaping and development of new IP. * Demonstrates ability to teach essential elements of expertise to broader cross-functional audiences. * Six sigma Green/Black Belt and or statistical data analysis skills (e.g. DOE, Gage R&R) and experience. * Track record of developing statistically validated test methods to link key material properties to consumer relevant product specifications. * Ability to develop and maintain coatings analysis Center of Excellence. **Qualifications** * Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Coatings Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Surface Science, Materials Science or related degree. * 3 to 5 years of product development or manufacturing experience in coatings or coated products. * Expertise in coating materials and processes (surface treatment, application and curing) such as powder coating, physical or chemical vapor deposition, fluoropolymer, electroplating or others applicable to consumer products. * Knowledge of design principles, physical properties and performance properties of coatings to ensure product specifications are met.
