Summary
The Lead Interaction Designer is an architect of the physical and digital interfaces of the da Vinci product line, including robotic systems, instruments and accessories. He or she works collaboratively with engineering teams to help develop new products and enhance existing products. The Principal Interaction Designer provides first-hand knowledge of user interaction with our products, develops and prototypes new user interface concepts, and performs evaluations to quickly iterate and converge on designs to delight our users and allow for easy and safe operation.
Responsibilities
* **Architect the future of surgical interface.** Design beautiful and functional physical and digital interfaces for the da Vinci product line. Maintain superior design standards and methods throughout the design process. Ensure a thorough understanding of the problems being solved by working with the clinical engineering, product managers and the engineering team. * **Organize and lead user research activities.** Create a program of user research that informs product design at Intuitive. Lead the team in the collection and synthesis of detailed information about how users interact with the da Vinci product through ethnography and other techniques. * **Participate in the development of the design organization.** Help build a team of top-notch designers at Intuitive. Serve as a mentor for other designers and help them hone their craft. * **Contribute to design documentation, risk analysis and testing.** Produce clear documentation that communicates design intent to engineering. Develop a deep understanding of safety risks in light of potential use errors. Participate in the validation of product usability through informal and formal testing with users.
Ideal Candidate
* Minimum of 12 years of experience in product design (in-house, agency, or freelance) * Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, in Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, or an engineering discipline * Proven record of bringing products to market that contain sophisticated user interactions, especially products with physical interactions that are not solely web- or software-based * Proficient in the use of current design tools and software applications * Possess a strong aesthetic sense and some artistic skill in addition to superior technical competence * Experience with GUI programming in either prototype or production environments is a plus * Passionate for delivering the best possible experience to the user * Ability to travel up to 10% of the time
