Summary
The Senior Food Materials Scientist will provide technical and project leadership towards the development of new ingredients/systems based on hydrocolloids, proteins, fibers, natural extracts and starches. He or she will lead and participate in cross functional teams to drive projects from concept to commercialization and will develop structure-function understanding of materials to drive new product innovation. He/she will add value to ingredients through processing and blending with other materials, utilizing food, material and polymer science principles and process engineering knowledge. The ingredients/systems developed will have improved new and/or unique functionality that will enhance our differentiated portfolio of ingredients. In addition, the Senior Materials Scientist will develop fundamental understanding of how ingredients interact within given food systems to allow manipulation of texture and other properties. He/she will support various customer engagements and new product development projects through in depth understanding of functional ingredients enriched with knowledge of physical properties of food products.
Responsibilities
**Business** * Drive a range of Applied Research and New Product Development projects by providing project leadership and direction. Ensure instrumental characterization is leveraged appropriately. Provide thought leadership on projects within and outside of area of responsibility. * Guide projects through an in depth knowledge of macromolecule chemistry and structure, ingredient interaction and texture control, in addition to microscopy and rheological measurement techniques. * Prioritize group efforts to deliver on most important and most commercially significant projects. **Agility and Innovation** * Use materials science expertise to proactively develop and progress ideas for new product innovations to drive future business growth. * Take a lead role in the ongoing development of structural analysis and mechanical testing excellence. * Encourage and drive invention. * Be recognized expert in ingredient design and materials science principals, internally and externally. **Relationships and People** * Interact with research theme/springboard leaders, key technology functions (Applications, Sensory, Process Technology, & Cereal Science) and the Go-to -Market functions globally. * Work across groups in a matrix organization depending on project leadership. * Collaborate with colleagues from Research, Development, Marketing, Technical Services and other groups to support new business opportunities. * Interface externally with relevant trade associations and universities.
Ideal Candidate
**Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:** * PhD/MS in food, polymer or materials science, chemical engineering or related field with 6-12+ years of relevant experience. * Expertise in biopolymers such as proteins, hydrocolloids, fibers, natural extracts and starch, including their application to food systems. * Knowledge of how to manipulate the functional properties of macromolecules by applying unit operations such as extrusion, spray drying, agglomeration. * Proven track record of utilizingmechanicalmeasurement techniques(e.g. rheology) and advanced microscopyto elucidate structure-function relationships. * Knowledge of statistical design and analysis tools is desired. * Track record of creating new Intellectual Property. * Proven project and program management experience. * Strong people management skills. * Proven ability to work in diverse team, tight timelines, multiple projects. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills **Desired behavior, personal attributes:** * Entrepreneurial mind-set with a passion for creating new solutions for the food industry. * Innovative, self-motivated and engaged individual who is able to drive excellence in material science and innovation. * Flexible and able to rapidly adapt to changing priorities.
