Summary
Provides actuarial support on Company projects. Calculates, summarizes, validates and reviews financial reports used in the Companies statutory and tax income statements. Develops, validates, runs and reviews systems and reports used in corporate modeling. Assists in all phases of product development design, filing and implementation. Performs periodic statistical experience studies. Engages in continuing education, primarily the taking and passing of the Society of Actuaries exams.
Responsibilities
* Reports directly to Director, Life Actuarial, from whom overall direction and training are received. * List in order of importance, describe what must be accomplished, not how it must be done and quality/quantity standards. Maintains, validates, updates, runs, and reviews the Corporate Model, for use in Corporate projections and planning, supporting financial statements, providing management information; providing data to the rating agencies and documenting the results. * Performs reviews of the Companies’ experience (i.e., mortality, persistency, or expense), calculates the impact of actual experience differing from expected financial results, summarizes and documents the results and communicates them back to the Director. * Reviews the profit and policyholder equity of existing life, health and annuity products, calculates what changes are necessary to premiums, dividend scales, or nonguaranteed elements to meet the Companies profit and equity goals, summarizes the results and communicates them to the Director, assists in the implementation of approved changes, if any, to the items listed above and documents results. If necessary, assists in filing changes with the Insurance Department. * Participates in the development of new products. This will include some or all of the following areas: Ideas for new products, calculating rates, values and profitability of the new design, loading rates and values into administration and illustration systems, checking output from the various computer systems, preparation and design marketing materials, creating the policy form and other materials for filing with the Insurance Department, documents results and other related activities as required. * Participation in the preparation of statutory and tax financial statements for the Company will include some or all of the following: calculation, review, and loading of factors for valuation systems, development, maintenance and updating of valuation programs, databases and spreadsheets, calculating, tabulating, and inputting results into worksheets, validating results for consistency with prior period values and current period activity, explaining deviations in results from expected and prior period results. * Assists in the tabulation of data and other needed research for use by the interest rate committee. Assists in the implementation of changes made by the interest rate committee. * Represents the Department on project teams. Supervises projects at the request of the Director. May receive supervision from other than the Director at the Director’s direction. Frequent routine contact with middle management and functional positions within all Departments. Routine contact with Senior Management, Agency, and Marketing personnel, consulting actuaries and the State Insurance Department. * Prepares and distributes periodic reports on Company activity. * Engages in continuing education and professional development. Studies to remain current with regulatory changes and evolving actuarial theory and practice. * Assists in the development, conversion, and maintenance of policy administration and illustration systems. Prepares special illustrations and quotes for marketing as requested. * Performs any special administrative duties or calculations requested by the Director.
Ideal Candidate
**Education:** * Bachelor’s Degree and either actuarial exam P or FM **Experience:** * 3-5 years in an Actuarial setting along with work experience in an office setting. **Knowledge / Skills:** * Requires skill in attentive and active listening, patience to hear people out and accurately restating the information provided. * Demonstrated multifaceted oral and written communication skills specific to creating and fostering a learning environment that focuses on customer service and its continuous improvement. * Ability to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles to obtain the desired effect. * Requires proficient use of calculator, personal computer and associated software, and programming skills in APL and other similar languages. * Must have excellent mathematical skills. Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot and develop additional tools. * Requires proven ability to be proactive, reliable and accountable. Executes procedures with sound judgment and provide guidance to staff. * Requires the ability to effectively cope with change, shifts gears comfortably and acts without having the total picture. * Ability to work in frequent stressful situations and adverse conditions and to meet established, as well as unexpected deadlines. * Requires demonstrated use of good judgment with regard to priorities and dealing with short/long-term deadlines for accomplishing assigned tasks. * Requires the ability to effectively communicate decisions, recommendations, and job-related information to internal and external customers. * Must be proactive, reliable and accountable self-starter with the ability to work independently without direct supervision. * Requires a thorough understanding of United Farm Bureau Family Insurance contracts. * Must agree to work towards membership in the Society of Actuaries.
