Summary
The Maintenance Specialist Apprentice in Leavenworth demonstrates a broad range of mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills by having the ability to repair equipment that ranges from simplistic to complex. Installs machinery and equipment to be used in production or related process by assembling, leveling, and mounting the equipment and by making the necessary electric, compressed air, gas and water connections. Dismantles machinery as required, reassembles machinery and makes new connections when moving from one location to another or disposing of equipment. Repairs and maintains machinery and equipment in accordance with blue prints, manuals, and craft codes by such operations as replacing belts, installation of electrical wiring, reading schematics, troubleshooting Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), etc.
Responsibilities
Modifies existing equipment or designs and builds new machines to improve capacity, quality, safety or cost. Instructs operators and Section Managers in the operation of new or modified equipment and works with them until they can satisfactorily work with the equipment. Makes necessary electro-mechanical, photo-electrical modifications. Transports and handles hazardous waste material in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local regulations. Positively participates in performance dialogues and other team problem-solving activities. Identifies potential problems, and shows willingness to proactively work on problem resolution and alternative solutions to traditional methods of operation. Takes the initiative to help problem solve and drive performance initiatives. Flexibility is key as the incumbent will be expected to move to different work areas as needed. * Perform routine electrical connections, repairs, and troubleshooting on AC Control Systems for 120/240/480 voltages. * Perform repair of power transmission systems. Safely operate shop machines in the fabrication of machinery parts and components. * Repair and maintain machinery in accordance with blueprints, manuals, and craft codes by replacing belts, repairing or installing electrical wiring and hydraulic lines. Shape, cut and thread pipe, conduit, and rods for similar purpose. * Troubleshoot and repair machinery controlled by Programmable Logic Control (PLC) and A/C Freq Drive systems. Be proficient at electronics, reading and interpreting electronic schematics and wiring ladder logic * Perform basic utility connections and repair of pneumatic, hydraulics, and electrical systems. * Safely operate arc, heli-arc, and gas welding equipment for the repair and installation of equipment; understand welding principles. * Modify existing equipment or design and build new machines to help improve throughput, quality, safety and cost. * Troubleshoot and repair electro-mechanical and solid state circuitry systems. * Understand and perform basic Facility Support services on HVAC, vacuum, and air systems. * Utilize good safety practices.
Ideal Candidate
**Basic Qualifications** * High School Diploma or GED * Completed certified technical training courses for all essential job functions OR two years experience in diagnostic & repair of electrical, electronics, or mechanical equipment operation/repair * Ability to grasp, lift and carry items weighing up to 60 lbs. frequently and 100 lbs. occasionally * Ability to stand and walk 90% of the time * Ability to occasionally work from ladders * Ability to frequently push, pull, bend, twist, reach, lift and work in awkward positions * Ability to frequently reach above shoulder level and perform fine finger movements **Preferred Qualifications** * Strong math, written and oral communication skills, as well as basic computer skills * Ability to set up area and work under pressure to meet production targets * Ability to understand and follow established safety procedures for wearing PPE, lock/and tagout, and handling hazardous chemicals * Ability to accept other duties as assigned * Ability to learn and retain knowledge **Additional Details** The Maintenance Specialist Apprentice must meet the City of Leavenworth electrical licensing requirements by completing 2 years of on-the-job electrical training, followed by successfully completing the National Electrical Code (NEC) test in order to possess a City of Leavenworth journeyman or master electrician license. The applicant will have 2 ½ years (apprenticeship + time to pass the test) to pass the NEC test. * Work overtime as required during peak seasons. * This is a maintenance environment that requires wearing appropriate PPE and following operating procedures when working with hazardous chemicals and hazardous energies, and while working in harsh operating environments without climate controls. * Must wear PPE for Arc Flash protection, as well as other PPE such as safety glasses and safety shoes. * Required to operate hand powered tools and industrial shop machinery. * Minimal travel required for training locally and/or out of town. * There is some noise and hearing protection is required by Hallmark.
