Summary
We are hiring an Art Director to supervise creative design within Families USA’s Communications Department. Working closely with a small team of editors and designers, the Art Director turns complex concepts, data, and information into visually engaging, intuitive, compelling products that effectively communicate messaging objectives to a variety of target audiences.
Responsibilities
* Develop information graphics from concept through execution * Design and layout longer (20 page) research reports, as well as shorter briefs and fact sheets * Recommend ways to repurpose or redesign existing visuals and data from print reports into engaging and visually compelling products/visuals for a broader web audience * Maintain, redesign, or create templates for research reports, briefs, and fact sheets * Create social media and digital marketing promotional and advocacy graphics (Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.) * Design logos and brand elements for emerging product lines as needed * Create primary and supporting visuals for website (banners, promo images, etc.) * Design marketing and consumer advocacy materials (print), including brochures, fact sheets, and other collateral * Design event and conference materials (print) * Conduct image research * Illustrate (light) as needed to supplement or alter stock art * Advise Digital team on webpage composition and functionality * Foster and manage vendor relationships for print products * Manage design staff and temp designers
Ideal Candidate
* Bachelor’s or advanced degree in design-related field * At least 10 years of experience as lead/senior designer or art director, plus at least five years of experience supervising and mentoring other designers * Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud products (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign in particular), and must be highly proficient in working with raw data in Excel * Working knowledge of coding for Web and mobile platforms (for example, HTML, CSS, JS) * A proven track record of developing and maintaining brand awareness across different channels * Extensive experience developing and designing data-intensive graphics and proven ability to turn complex concepts into compelling visual products * Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in the field of data visualization * Experience designing a range of print-based products, such as research reports and marketing materials * Exceptional attention to detail and quality control * Experience managing projects and people across teams and at varying levels of seniority * Good balance of analytical thinking combined with creativity * Superior communications skills * Patience, flexibility, sense of humor, persistence, and tact * Experience working in a research/advocacy environment is a plus
