ECS Federal, LLC (ECS) is seeking a Communications Specialist to work in our Silver Spring, MD office.

NOAA Fisheries is seeking a creative, self-motivated, experienced writer to join the communications team at NOAA Fisheries. Ideally, the person would have a background in journalism, skills in photography, and experience developing podcasts and other multimedia.

The writer will be the lead content developer for the agency’s national website with an emphasis on developing original, timely science-related content using a variety of formats (i.e., feature story, Q&A, podcast, photo essay). As needed, the writer will assist with other communications projects such as print and multimedia products (i.e., videos, blogs), meetings and events (i.e., Hill briefings), rollout plans, and ongoing outreach campaigns. Tasks will require people skills, attention to detail, the ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlines, the ability remain flexible as deadlines and priorities shift, and experience clearing pieces through various levels of review.

Required Skills:

• Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, online communications, writing, science communication, biology or other related field. Graduate degree preferred.
• 3-5 years’ experience writing for a news organization, an agency, a business, or a non-governmental organization.
• Experience being part of a successful team in a professional capacity.
• Experience being part of or managing a successful communications effort for an organization.
• Comfortable interviewing experts in a journalistic style and ability to translate technical and scientific jargon into plain language for target audiences.
• Recent experience with podcast production and using social media tools as part of a strategic communications effort for an organization.
• Exceptional communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Ability to think creatively in terms of approaches and tactics.
• Experience with Adobe Photoshop and audio software.
• Understanding of 508 accessibility requirements.

Desired Skills:

• Training and/or experience with professional photography is a plus.
