Summary
eBay is looking for a senior technical writer to create and maintain documentation for eBay selling tools. Your audience is primarily large merchants and high-volume seller who wish to expand their business on eBay. Some documentation will be targeted at a technical audience, as some products have a developer touch point.
Responsibilities
As a member of our team, you’ll be able to exercise your fascination with technology, plus your passion for helping customers, while exploring ideas for next-generation doc design. We’ll help you develop a first-hand understanding of our products, customers, business objectives, and goals; so that you can use that knowledge holistically to craft your docs and contribute to the evolution of our doc tools and standards. While our API docs and educational materials cover commerce topics more than technology, eBay technical writers need to be reasonably "technical" in order to communicate effectively with our stakeholders and audiences, as well as to install and run development tools. eBay technical writers also need to understand how to position and evangelize products, to help our customers understand the commerce benefits of incorporating new features and functions into their business processes. * Teach developers how eBay works, and how to use eBay tools to grow their business * Create reference docs, users guides, and other educational materials * Create, explain, and test eBay selling tools * Leverage your understanding of our customers’ technical and business needs to influence eBay’s offerings to developers * Contribute to doc/education, product, and/or tool usability research * Work closely with engineering, product management, support, and QA teams to create and review your deliverables * Stay aware of industry trends and best practices, to enhance and evolve our doc and other educational standards, tools, and processes * Be a self-starter, able to take a project and run with it * Manage time and projects effectively, juggling multiple projects and deliverables * Establish and monitor a set of metrics to track your success
Ideal Candidate
**Our ideal candidate has all of these technical qualifications:** * Experience designing, writing, and usability-testing reference and usage documentation * 5+ years experience writing docs for technical audiences * Able to articulate commerce concepts and uses of eBay tools perform commerce activities * Basic ability to read, modify, and test sample JavaScript code * Able to articulate basic database concepts at a conceptual level * Comfortable authoring structured documentation in DITA XML and/or other structured formats * Experience with translation (T12n) and localization (L10n) * Nice to have: Experience with XMetal and other XML authoring tools * Nice to have: Experience with MadCap Flare authoring tools * Nice to have: Experience creating educational videos or other learning tools **Plus, our ideal candidate has these qualities:** * Familiar with and enthusiastic about eBay and online commerce * Motivated to work independently, and also happy to co-author docs with other writers * Able to organize your own work with minimal supervision, given project deadlines * Curious about technology, and able to learn new concepts quickly * Focuses on what's important (with an eye for details that matter) * Comfortable with ambiguity and with helping others adapt to change * Advocates for product and/or doc improvements when appropriate * Builds great relationships with internal subject matter experts and external customers
