Summary
The Assistant General Counsel will be part of the Corporate Employment Legal team and, among other duties, will work with cross functional teams to review and draft employment-related contracts including consulting, recruiting, benefits, proprietary and confidentiality and other business agreements.
Responsibilities
* Provide practical legal counsel and develop creative solutions to HR issues * Efficiently manage a large volume and variety of other areas of responsibilities such as termination of employment, workers compensation, sexual harassment, workplace safety, wage and overtime standards and employee privacy rights. * Assess potential risks, benefits and consequences of decisions, present alternatives and propose solutions to achieve business objectives while effectively managing legal and practical business considerations * Interface directly with various internal business units, including Human Resources, external counsel, upper senior management, business units and procurement. * Work with cross functional teams (Compliance, HR) to improve processes, systems, and forms to achieve better efficiency and productivity, such as Employee benefits, leaves of absence, retirement plans and, workers compensation * Work on discrimination against employees based on age, national origin, race, creed, disability, marital status, medical conditions, religion, sex, or sexual orientation * If necessary, represent the employer before government administrative boards or by defending them in state and local courts * Other duties as assigned and as needed to support the legal department
Ideal Candidate
* JD from ABA accredited law school * Member of VA State Bar Corporate Counsel * Minimum of 4-6 years of law firm experience, working in-house in a legal department of a company and/or at a national law firm in a corporate practice group specializing in employment law. * Strong working knowledge of employment law and the ability to perform risk and crisis management duties by advising executives on how to handle difficult employee situations * Highly developed written and oral communication skills, with special emphasis on employment law. Excellent drafting and negotiation skills and attention to detail * Ability to spot issues and suggest improvements to form agreements * Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks * Strong interpersonal management skills to foster teamwork, provide outstanding leadership and guidance and maintain effective working relationships with internal clients and external customers, agents and vendors. Ability to be creative and flexible. * Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as work part of a team
