Summary
he Emergency Technician assists the healthcare professionals with providing timely and appropriate care and treatment to emergency room patients. Contributes to the smooth and efficient flow of patients through the department. Provides patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification, registration, and/or assessed competencies. Practice will be in accordance with laws and regulations and will adhere to established policies, procedures and practice guidelines.
Responsibilities
* Under direction of Registered Nurse, performs basic diagnostic tests, takes vital signs, obtains lab specimens, performs superficial wound care and initiates peripheral IV * Collects, reports, and documents clinical data accurately and promptly. Communicates observations, concerns and needs of patient to Registered Nurse. * Operates equipment, such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), in advanced life support environments. * Monitors and maintains medical supplies and equipment. Communicates/reports equipment malfunction and replenishes first aid supplies. * Collaborates with healthcare team to support communications required to facilitate patient care. * Participates in continuous quality improvement teams and activities. * Participates in supporting the organization’s vision, mission and values and adheres to DeKalb Medical Standards of Behavior. * Performs other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of DeKalb Medical.
Ideal Candidate
Minimum Education, Experience and Licensure Required: * A High school diploma or GED * One (1) or more years experience as an EMT or Paramedic. * BLS certification through the American Heart Association * Certified from a technical school as Paramedic, CNA, PCT, EMT, MA; or completion of a Medical Assistant program (without certification) with 1 year ED experience Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: * Demonstrates tact, versatility, and dependability * Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, patients and others * Demonstrates compassion and sensitivity to patients and family * High degree of self-motivation and directional initiative * Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously * Ability to cope and remain calm in escalating situations * Ability to handle complex problems or health issues of patients * Ability to compute rate, percent and ratio to interpret and draw bar graphs. * Effective team member * Functions independently after orientation with preceptor * Performs skills and competencies as defined in orientation checklist and annual departmental competency checklist if applicable * Demonstrates and maintains competencies specific to patient population served
