Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Philanthropy and Campaign Strategies, the Senior Director of Development plans, directs and implements capital, endowment, and programmatic fundraising for foundation prospects and participates in the development of strategic plans for foundation fundraising for City of Hope priorities. Under the direction of the Vice President, the Senior Director develops grant proposals to obtain funding from grant making organizations, including private and corporate foundations, and implements appropriate follow-up reporting and stewardship. The Senior Development Director serves as lead development resource for identification, cultivation, solicitation and acquisition of foundation donors for strategic funding priorities.

The position requires exceptional organizational, analytical, writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to work in a collaborative and consultative manner with faculty, administrators, and staff. Responsibilities include identifying, cultivating and soliciting prospective foundation donors and working effectively with City of Hope faculty and staff. The Senior Director exercises considerable judgment in the preparation, management and development of fund raising proposals and presents proposals to prospective private foundations

Responsibilities

The Senior Development Director must understand the nature and peculiarities of foundation programs and the relevant administrative, legal, and financial regulations. A background in biomedical or scientific research is strongly recommended Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements goals and objectives for the foundation fundraising program.
  • Works as a partner with faculty on a variety of fundraising initiatives and maintains and enhances collaborative relationships with COH administrative offices and donors.
  • Utilizes research data to define strategic plans for solicitation of prospects.
  • Prepares and presents proposals to prospective donors and/or their advisors.
  • Maintains an understanding and knowledge of foundation fundraising techniques, for use in major and principal gift solicitation. Maintains professional growth and development and keeps abreast of latest trends in area of expertise.
  • Conducts and/or facilitates the development of focused donor meetings and/or donor cultivation events to inform donors and/or prospects of City of Hope programs and to provide targeted information regarding gift opportunities.
  • Partners and coordinates with other Development Directors on the identification and promotion of individuals, corporations and foundations from annual contributors, support group participants and select prospects for major and principal gifts.
  • Arranges and coordinates targeted visits of City of Hope with prospects and donors.
  • Works in coordination with the Foundation Relations Program Coordinator to prepare monthly progress reports detailing prospect and donor activity.
  • Maintains a positive image when dealing with executive staff, donors, prospects, fundraisers and other City of Hope employees.
  • Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Attends meetings as required, and participates on committees as directed.
  • Provides leadership to the team effort of raising major foundation gifts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested
Ideal Candidate

Minimum Education and Skills Required for Consideration:

  • Bachelor's Degree. One or more advanced degrees in biological sciences strongly preferred.
  • 5-8 years experience in grant development and/or administration. Relevant education or related experience in biomedical sciences or health care may be substituted for part of this requirement. A firm grasp of the issues and needs of research, teaching and clinical operations in a complex health sciences research university environment.
