Summary
Being a member of the Product team means you will be deeply involved in helping define the future of Chef: As an open source project, as a commercial offering, and as a company. You will make a real difference in the lives of Chef's users, customers, and your colleagues. You'll have the power to make your mark both on the success of the business, and in the entire IT industry by improving Chef's offerings. As Product Manager, you understand and represent the voice of the customer at Chef. You will guide teams charged with delivering products aligned to Chef’s business objectives. This ranges from increasing customer retention on existing products, increasing profitability of our products, or developing wholly new products for the company. You possess a unique blend of business and technical savvy: a big-picture vision, and the drive to make that vision a reality. You love spending time talking to customers to understand their problems, and finding innovative solutions for the broader market. When you’re not speaking with customers, you’ll partner with other areas of the company: You will work with an engineering counterpart to define product release requirements. You will work with UX designers to provide domain expertise into the beautiful user experiences they create You will work with marketing to define the go-to-market strategy, helping them understand the product positioning, key benefits, and target customer. You will also serve as the internal and external evangelist for your product offering, occasionally working with the sales channel and key customers. A product management role is a great fit for someone with a technical background or relevant domain expertise that loves talking to customers, understanding their problems, and building great products to surprise and delight them.
Responsibilities
* Understand the market & competitors * Help define a product vision and strategy * Research, understand, and represent the voice of the customer through frequent interactions with customers * Work closely with other teams at Chef: engineering, documentation, marketing, sales, and customer-facing teams * Break down complex problems into steps that drive iterative product development * Be accountable for building the right product features to support business objectives and delight customers
Ideal Candidate
* 3+ years of software product marketing, product management or equivalent customer-facing experience. * Hands-on experience as a developer or system administrator is preferred. * A passion for understanding users and their experiences with products. * Knowledge of user experience design and research practices is helpful. * Prior experience with Chef or other automation tools a plus. * A sense and passion for building great products, and curiosity about delightful products no matter what the domain. * Experience with lean/agile development methodologies (Kanban, XP or Scrum) * This position requires occasional travel to customer and non-customer sites (less than 25%) * Experience working with geographically-distributed teams scattered across the world. * Remote work is acceptable, but being located in Seattle or San Francisco near Chef’s offices is a plus.
