Summary
The Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist (under the direction of the Medical Director, Hospital Epidemiology) is responsible for coordination and participation in an effective antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) emphasizing high quality and cost-effective patient care, and its coordination with Medical Center Management and Medical Staff.
Responsibilities
* Works with Infectious Diseases faculty in establishing goals and measurement; facilitates collaboration among the Departments of Hospital Epidemiology, Pharmacy, Microbiology * Under direction of the Medical Director, facilitates and validates ongoing surveillance activities, including antimicrobial use surveillance, consultation and data analysis performed by department staff. * Recommends and oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of administrative and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines and protocols related to antimicrobial use and prophylaxis, which support the goals of the department subject to review, as appropriate, by the Infection Prevention and Control Committee, Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, Clinical Improvement Committee, Medical Executive Committee and the Hospital Administrator or their designee(s). * Work with professional and ancillary staff in the Department of Pharmacy to optimize antimicrobial utilization and ensure evidence based and cost effective use: Collaborates with medical staff in development of evidence based guidelines; participates in implementing stewardship interventions and relevant performance improvement projects; evaluates new drugs for formulary; serves as a resource to staff on therapeutic issues; precepts students, residents and fellows (pharmacy, physician house staff); and provides inservices to staff (e.g. medical, nursing, pharmacy). * Provide ongoing advice on “best practices” and guidelines as they relate to antimicrobial use and appropriate testing. * Provides support in organizational performance improvement activities related to antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention * Through analysis of current antimicrobial use monitoring data, identifies areas of potential opportunities for improvement. * Participates in committees (Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention Committees, relevant Performance Improvement Committees, Infectious Diseases Division); attends and coordinates as necessary and appropriate * Develops and implements periodic reports (as identified by Director) of department activities to Medical Staff Committees and Administration * Serves a key role in the hospital-wide quality and safety program. Promotes collaborative, multi-disciplinary approaches to clinical problem-solving and continuous quality improvement * Assures that all aspects of the department are consistent with regulations affecting the Medical Center; i.e. JCAHO standards; CDC guidelines; Federal, State and local laws, specifically state and federal OSHA regulatory text pertaining to Infection Control; Medicare and other third party payor requirements
Ideal Candidate
**Educational Requirements:** * Pharm.D **License/Certification/Registration Requirements:** * Current State of California Pharmacist License. **Experience:** * The ideal candidate should have an Infectious Diseases PGY 2 residency and/or equivalent experience in Infectious Disease and Antimicrobial Stewardship. * Exemplary oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills and commitment to quality are also required. **The following are desired but not requirements.** * Two (2) years' experience in similar position preferred. * Experience in measuring clinical performance and antimicrobial use at an academic medical center. **Physical Demands:** * The physical ability and perceptive acuity to satisfactorily perform all direct and indirect job functions.
