Summary
The Physical Biochemistry department is seeking an independent and highly motivated Protein Chemist to join the Small Molecule Protein Sciences group (SMPS) at the Scientist I level. The SMPS is responsible for providing high quality protein reagents for small molecule targets to the Bioassay group and the Structural biology groups. The successful candidate must possess a broad set of skills, including Molecular Biology, expression and purification of proteins and multi-protein complexes from E.coli and insect cells. Special emphasis will be given to candidates with the ability to carry out parallel processes in cloning, expression and purification. The selected individual will have the opportunity to work in cross-functional teams and should be able to clearly communicate their results and accomplishments to a broad audience at team meetings and in written reports.
Responsibilities
* Innovate in solving difficult biochemical problems; experience in teaching technical skills to other members of the group. * Generate automated methods to purify proteins or protein complexes (ProteinMaker, Phynexus or Akta Express) * Carry out design of optimal expression constructs based on a variety of Bioinformatics approaches and published literature. Working knowledge on a variety of protein superfamilies will be a plus. * Quickly generate optimized plasmid constructs using latest molecular biology techniques for expression in bacterial, insect and mammalian cells. * Perform insect cell growth, maintenance and archival. Proficiency in tissue culture techniques is a must. * Perform small scale expression validation using small scale purifications and arrive at quick conclusions. * The individual should be self-organized, with good book-keeping abilities and be able to compile important results in a timely fashion and be able to persuade others through data.
Ideal Candidate
**Education** * Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or a related field. * 3-5 years of postdoctoral or industrial experience in a Structural Biology or Protein Chemistry lab. The individual should be self-organized, with good book-keeping abilities and be able to compile important results in a timely fashion and be able to persuade others through data.
