Summary
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety or related discipline and at least three years of related experience required. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of seven years of related experience. The Process Safety Engineer supports the safe operation of complex manufacturing systems through the identification of potential risks, evaluation of existing practices, and assisting in the development and implementation of controls to ensure a safe and productive environment. The Safety Engineer provides a high level of technical expertise to Management, Engineers and Operators. Additionally, the Process Safety Engineer will be people-oriented with the ability to affect change.
Responsibilities
* Identify and participate in the resolution of process weaknesses that present unreasonable risk to people and property utilizing Hazard Operability (HAZOPS) and similar analysis tools. * Develop, review and approve work practices to ensure incident-free operation of complex chemical and mechanical processing systems. * Evaluate the impact of operational change as it relates to the protection of people, property and the company. * Assist with contractor safety management for site operations. * Lead the development of formal Process Hazard Analysis (PHAs) for high-risk operations. * Implement a Process Safety Management program in accordance with 29CFR 1910.119. * Conduct detailed post incident and near miss investigations utilizing FMEA, FTA & MORT to determine root cause and contributing factors. Ensures the completion of corrective actions. * Lead the development of a permitting system for non-routine and high hazard tasks. * Serve in key role for the internal emergency response team (HazMat) & assist with preparedness, training and equipment selection. * Develop and maintain equipment and job-specific Lockout / Tagout procedures for complex systems. * Present and evaluate the on-going effectiveness of training programs to personnel related the organization’s Environmental Health & Safety Management System. * Perform routine EH&S inspections of PPE, environmental monitoring, fire control and emergency response systems. * Assign, track and oversee the timely completion of safety related action items. * Coordinate with the Environmental Engineer for hazardous material handling, storage and disposal. * Support all areas of the Arthrex Environmental, Health and Safety Program to maintain compliance with applicable OSHA and EPA Regulations and established procedures. * Occasional overnight travel to support operations and attend training as necessary. * 24/7 response availability. **Incidental Duties:** The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed in this job. Ideal Candidate
**Education and Experience:** * Bachelor’s Degree required in Engineering, Occupational Safety or related discipline. * Minimum 3 years of experience in process or systems safety engineering. * Experience in chemical manufacturing, processing, or medical device sterilization industries is preferred. * PE, CIH or CSP preferred. **Knowledge and Skill Requirements/ Specialized Courses and/or Training:** * Experience with OSHA Process Safety Management and EPA Risk Management programs. * Must maintain qualifications to serve at the OSHA HazMat Specialist Level. * Must successfully complete an OSHA 30 hr. training certification within six months of hire. * Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Must complete First Aid, CPR and AED Certification and be willing and capable to provide first aid to others. * Has the knowledge and skills necessary to interpret regulations, permits, and other technical data. **Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:** * Computer skills to include Microsoft Office. * Operation of specialty environmental monitoring devices & software. **Reasoning Ability:** * Ability to work in a team environment and independently to solve complex human or environmental issues. * Ability to read and interpret federal and state regulations. **Mathematical Skills:** * Ability to comprehend and apply mathematical principles to the degree required to perform the job based upon job requirements. **Language and Communication Skills:** * Ability to comprehend and apply language skills to the degree required to perform the job based upon the job requirements listed above. Ability to communicate ideas and issues effectively to team members and management. Effective report writing skills. **Physical Demands:** * While performing this job the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and work inside a hot and confined area. Must be medically qualified to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and level-A hazmat suit.
