Summary
Alteris, Inc, a subsidiary of Argo Group, offers managing general agencies and carriers access to a broad array of exclusive risk solutions for specialty market niches and alternative risks. Alteris has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Senior Underwriter. This position can be filled by a home based employee who can access our San Francisco, California office as needed for in-office support, meetings, etc. The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner for our WaterPlus program and according to authority level and established guidelines, and participate in special projects.
Responsibilities
* Review moderately complex policies to verify acceptability based upon company underwriting guidelines and granted underwriting authority. * Price and quote accounts within company guidelines. * Continuous interaction with actuarial team for analysis on account performance and pricing strategies to meet business objectives. * Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline risks. * Meet or exceed new business and renewal underwriting production goals * Oversee and approve endorsements as indicated. * Resolve premium audit disputes within assigned territory. * Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. * Review state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within the state. * Consult with general agents/brokers to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain underwriting guidelines. * Create, analyze, and interpret data from various reports. * Manage assigned underwriting territory, including management of agents and travel to agent offices.
Ideal Candidate
* Bachelors’ degree in business or related field. CPCU, ARM or other Insurance Institute coursework also required. * A minimum of 7 years experience underwriting profitable business. Commercial auto underwriting experience is required. A background in multi-state commercial insurance is strongly preferred. Understanding of the municipality water industry strongly preferred. * Demonstrates significant contribution to underwriting profit. * Demonstrates an understanding and ability to effectively engage in the negotiation process. * Independent decision maker – takes full responsibility for making decisions and consequences associated with decisions. * Intellectual curiosity – the ability to consistently consider all options and is not governed by conventional thinking. * Client focus – the ability to effectively determine specific client needs and to provide value added solutions. * A team builder, someone who understands that success is dependent upon the performance of the team and not individual team members. * Experience in delivering presentations to all internal and external audiences. * Strong interpersonal skills, good judgment and be capable of communicating with a diverse range of individuals. * Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with clients, business partners and organizational peers with a focus on timely and meaningful exchanges of information. * Detail oriented with initiative and the ability to work independently in a fast paced environment. * Excellent analytical skills, particularly with forms analysis and comparison. * Ability to build commitment both internally and externally. * Proven employee development, mentoring, coaching and performance management skills. * Proficient in the use of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. * Polished and professional written and verbal communication skills. The ability to read and write English fluently is required. * Ability to travel, sometimes overnight, approximately 10% of the time. Employees are expected to have sufficient credit available to incur travel expenses (i.e. airfare, lodging. meals, rental car) for duration of the trip and be reimbursed by the company. * Must demonstrate a desire for continued professional development through continuing education and self-development opportunities. * Rate filing experience is strongly desired but not required.
