Summary
Akamai's Platform Engineering organization is seeking a Senior Program Manager to lead and coordinate cross-functional technical initiatives. You will be at the forefront of strategic developer productivity and change management programs that span the entire software development life cycle and directly contribute to achieving Akamai’s business goals and objectives. As part of a multi-year program your initial focus will be on driving programs that continue the introduction of the Git source code management system and introduce Enterprise JIRA issue management and Confluence wiki and program/project management systems to Akamai. Both programs offer the team an opportunity to introduce standardized working practices and will require customer migration from existing systems. You will find this to be an extremely exciting and challenging new position working alongside a dynamic engineering leader whose programs serve a broad customer base. The role offers the selected candidate exceptional visibility and potential for rapid career advancement. You will work with cross-functional teams with members from Platform Engineering, Product Development, Product Operations, Networks, and Information Security. Close coordination with global development team members is a key component of this position. You will work extremely closely with the Director of Developer Productivity and his team and report to the Director of Program Management. To succeed in this role, you must be well-organized, technically-oriented, and a self-starter with a demonstrated ability to lead, prioritize, and generate high quality deliverables, and to also effectively facilitate communications between teams while also considering the big picture. Exceptional negotiating, influencing and communication skills should be part of your daily toolkit. Experience in Agile development and associated environments is highly desired. Working within the Platform Engineering Program Management team in extremely close coordination with engineering leadership, you will also be expected to understand, illustrate, and document technical systems, and to work with the team to bound scope establish integrated schedules, and make resource estimates, and to assess and communicate program progress and risk. You must have excellent technical writing skills, strong oral communication skills, and be comfortable speaking with and presenting to senior management. You should have solid experience with software systems and tools as well as new product development processes, and must be able to prioritize effectively, work collaboratively, and coordinate the activities of geographically distributed technical teams in a fast-paced environment. The Platform Engineering Program Management team enables engineering groups to: deliver technical scope on time and within resource constraints; manage program risks, to communicate and coordinate activity across constituencies; and to make continuous process improvements. The Developer Productivity engineering team designs, builds, integrates, improves and maintains the toolset that supports Akamai’s engineering and software development life cycle and moves the company faster forward.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate initiatives across key stakeholders in the Platform Division, Product Development Group Business Units, Information Security, and other Akamai organizations to establish program scope and understand schedule requirements. - Work with engineering and program management professionals across key stakeholders to identify and manage dependencies and to keep communication channels open on high visibility programs. - Identify areas of risk and opportunity, manage conflicts, and collaboratively create mutually acceptable solutions. - Develop, edit, maintain, and publish program management documentation including program scope definitions, schedules, risk management reports, and resource estimates. - Communicate program status, decisions, actions, as well as risk areas and mitigation plans. - Develop strong partnerships with program stakeholders across the organization.
Ideal Candidate
**Basic Qualifications** - Education: Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a very closely related technical field. - 7+ years experience working with software development teams on mission critical systems. - 3+ years experience with technical project or program management. - 3+ years experience managing complex programs across teams and geographies. **Desired Qualifications** - Masters degree in relevant Engineering discipline and/or MBA preferred. - Internet and/or software engineering industry experience strongly preferred. - Demonstrated ability to grasp new technical concepts quickly. - Proven leadership, organization, and planning skills. - Proven ability to deliver large cross-functional strategic initiatives. - Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills and the ability to work effectively and professionally across a wide range of constituencies and/or geographies. - Experience working in a fast-paced matrix technical organization. - Exceptional oral and written communications skills. - Significant experience with, or understanding of, Akamai’s culture and technology stack.
